The Jelenia Góra – Kamienna Góra railway was a branch line in Poland . It ran from Jelenia Góra ( Hirschberg ) via Kowary ( Schmiedeberg ) to Kamienna Góra (state hat ) in Lower Silesia .

Disused railway line from Schmiedeberg (Kowary) to Landeshut (Kamienna Góra)

The first section to Schmiedeberg was opened on May 15, 1882 by the Prussian State Railways . The continuation over the pass to Landeshut was only built after the turn of the century. In order to overcome the enormous difference in height up to the top of the pass, a very winding route with embankments and incisions was required at Schmiedeberg so that the necessary artificial length development could be achieved. The top of the pass itself was crossed in a longer vertex tunnel. On June 5, 1905, the first trains ran continuously to Landeshut.

From 1911 the Silesian Mountain Railway and a large part of the subsequent lines were electrified with single-phase alternating current 15 kV, 16 2/3 Hz. At the beginning of the 1930s, the Hirschberg – Landeshut connection was one of the last lines in Silesia to be equipped with an electric catenary. Electric train operations began on December 19, 1932.

After the Second World War, Silesia came under Polish administration and the line became the property of the Polish State Railways PKP. After the damage to the energy supply had been repaired, electric train operations could be resumed with the few remaining vehicles in the summer of 1945. Because the Rohrlacher Tunnel was blown up, all train traffic between Hirschberg and Waldenburg was initially handled via the Hirschberg – Landeshut branch line. On July 8, 1945, the electrical operation was stopped and the electrical contact lines were dismantled as a reparation payment for the Soviet Union .

The PKP operated the entire route until 1986. There was then freight traffic from Jelenia Góra to Kowary and from Kamienna Góra to Ogorzelec. In passenger train traffic, the section to Mysłakowice was initially served by passenger trains in the direction of Karpacz ( Krummhübel ) until 2000. Since 2005, freight traffic has only taken place to Mysłakowice ( Zillertal-Erdmannsdorf ); the entire line has been closed since January 1, 2007.

Since August 2016 the Lower Silesian Voivodeship has been planning to reopen the Jelenia Góra – Kowary section together with the branching line to Karpacz .

Vehicle use

Characteristic for the railway line from Hirschberg to Landeshut were the electric multiple units procured by the Prussian State Railways as 501 Breslau to 506 Breslau specifically for operation on the Silesian routes. These three-part railcars consisted of a centrally arranged motor car, which also carried a service compartment, and two three-axle control cars with compartments of 2nd and 3rd class. The Deutsche Reichsbahn later referred to the vehicles as the ET 87 series.

In addition, the modern multiple units of the DR class ET 51 , which had been purchased from 1934, were also used. An old photo from 1938 shows an ET 51 with a trailer and a control car between Mittel- and Ober-Schmiedeberg.
