The Kuřim – Veverská Bítýška railway was a regional railway connection in the Czech Republic that was originally built and operated as the Gurein – Bittischka-Eichhorn local railway (Czech: Místní dráha Kuřim – Veverská Bítýška ). The route ran from Kuřim ( Gurein ) to Veverská Bítýška ( Eichhorn Bittischka ) in South Moravia . The line was closed in 1936.

history

The first railway project to connect Veverská Bitýška was dated back to 1868, when a railway connection from Brno to Deutschbrod was planned through the Svratka valley . This route was later built further south along the Bobrava and Jihlava rivers.

On September 12, 1910, the Vice President of the Napajedler Zuckerfabriksgesellschaft Dr. Cyrill Seifert in Napajedl was granted the concession "to build and operate a standard-gauge local railway from the Gurein station of the Imperial and Royal State Railway to Bittischka Eichhorn" . The company's share capital totaled 518,000 crowns, divided into 1,295 ordinary shares of 400 crowns each.

The line was opened on February 16, 1911. The operation was carried out by the Brno Local Railway Company (BLEG) on behalf of the Gurein – Bittischka-Eichhorn local railway . In the same year, a cable car was built between the Maršov kaolin factory and the Veverská Bitýška train station, by means of which the kaolin could be transported by rail.

The timetable from 1929 shows only two daily train pairs, each of which required 22 minutes for the entire route in both directions.

On October 3, 1936, traffic on the local railway was stopped. On November 22, 1937 the line was finally closed after all operational vehicles had been sold to the Otrokovicko – Zlínsko – Vizovická dráha (OZVD). The local railway company was subsequently dissolved.

In 1940, the Kuřim – Moravské Knínice section was put back into operation for the transport of materials to the construction site of the Vienna – Wroclaw Reichsautobahn . After construction work ceased in 1943, the route continued to serve as a connecting line for the Axinit underground factory for aircraft engine production at Klöckner-Werke . Only after 1945 was the line finally abandoned.

Vehicle use

The local railway Gurein – Bittischka-Eichhorn procured two quadruple-coupled local railway locomotives for their route, as they were also procured by the kk state railways as class 178 . They received numbers 1 and 2.

After the line was closed, the number 1 came to the OZVD and was given the number 422.901. Both locomotives were later added to the stock of the Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD) as 422.0112 and 422.0106 . They were only taken out of service there in 1961 and 1963.
