The Lucerne – Immensee railway connects Lucerne with Immensee , the starting point of the Gotthard Railway (GB). It was built by GB and opened on June 1, 1897 as the Lucerne Gotthard Railway feeder. With the nationalization of the Gotthard Railway, the route became the property of the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) on May 1, 1909 .

Route description

The railway line, including the terminus stations, has seven stations and stops in the municipalities of Lucerne and Meggen as well as in the Küssnacht district . The route is single lane; Crossing options are only available at the Küssnacht am Rigi, Meggen and Luzern Verkehrshaus train stations (Würzenbach service station until 2007), which are also used on the route due to the half-hourly service.

In 1994, the line between Lucerne and Immensee was threatened with closure and traffic should be switched to buses.

In 1997 the line was completely closed in order to carry out various renovations, including a new train station in Küssnacht. Since then, the Gotthard long-distance trains have been running to Lucerne via Rotkreuz, the route via Küssnacht has been reserved for regional traffic and long-distance trains to Romanshorn.

The Meggen Zentrum stop was opened in 2006 as part of the Lucerne S-Bahn; The Luzern Verkehrshaus train station was built in the Würzenbach service station area and opened in 2007. Luzern Verkehrshaus was announced as a stop everywhere, but from an operational point of view it is a train station, as there are switches in the station area to enable a switch.

Since March 2011 the Küssnacht station has been rebuilt again. Instead of the previous level crossing of the tracks by pedestrians, a central platform including an underpass will be created. This is part of the project to convert the station into a regional transport hub.

Accident in the Gütsch tunnel

On December 13, 1932, the Lucerne – Arth-Goldau regional train collided with the Stuttgart - Zurich – Lucerne international express train in the Gütschtunnel. Six people were killed and over ten injured. This accident resulted in the introduction of the Integra-Signum train protection system throughout Switzerland .

Transport offer

The railway line is operated every hour by the S3 of the Lucerne S-Bahn from the Lucerne – Küssnacht– Brunnen train route and the Voralpen-Express . The latter stops in Lucerne Verkehrshaus, Meggen Zentrum and Küssnacht, and the S-Bahn stops at all stops. The two train runs take about half an hour. In the outskirts of the day and in the morning rush hour, the Voralpen-Express trains from Romanshorn only run to Rapperswil or Herisau , during this time the S3 runs every half hour between Brunnen or Arth-Goldau and Lucerne and serves all stops.
