The Kętrzyn – Węgorzewo railway runs in the north-east of the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship in Poland in the former East Prussian Masuria . It runs in a north-south direction and connects the two district towns of Kętrzyn ( German Rastenburg ) and Węgorzewo (Angerburg) .
history
The town of Rastenburg was connected to the East Prussian railway network with a newly built station on November 1st, 1867 - with the completion of the Rastenburg – Bartenstein ( Polish: Bartoszyce ) section of the Königsberg – Prostken railway line . A year later, on December 8th, 1868, the next section from Rastenburg to Lyck ( Polish Ełk ) was put into operation.
On July 1, 1907, the newly built railway line from Rastenburg to Angerburg was opened. The 33.2 kilometer long line with a gauge of 1435 mm led through a scenic area of the Masurian Lake District connecting the two cities of Rastenburg and Angerburg.
For Rastenburg, the connection to the Bischdorf – Neumühl railway followed on July 1, 1908 , which shared the Königsberg – Prostken railway line from Neumühl to Rastenburg. This was followed in the next few years by the completion of four lines of the Rastenburger Kleinbahnen with the connection of the city to Sensburg (Polish Mrągowo), Rhine (Ryn), Drengfurt (Srokowo) and Barten (Barciany).
A total of ten stations are on the railway line from Kętrzyn to Węgorzewo. In the 1940s, the Moysee stop ( Jezioro Mój in Polish ) was lifted. The Görlitz (Ostpr.) ( Polish: Gierłoż ) stop was expanded to three platforms in 1941 in order to have a direct connection to the Wolfsschanze (Polish : Wilczy Szaniec ) headquarters . On June 23, 1941, the first special driver train drove into the "new" station. It was only used until 1944, after which the route could be reopened for normal traffic for a few months.
After damage caused by the war, the Kętrzyn – Węgorzewo railway was put back into operation in 1949. After more than thirty years, it was closed to passenger traffic in 1992 and goods traffic in 2000. After a two-year trial period in 2008/2009, in which the route was used for excursion traffic, it had been approved for tourism and in operation since August 10, 2013. No operation was announced for 2015. Trains ran again in the summer of 2016. In September 2017, passenger traffic was stopped again because the SKPL company did not have any vehicles available for special traffic.
Angerburg station
In Angerburg , the railway line from Rastenburg met numerous railway lines that connected the city with Königsberg (Prussia) ( Russian Kaliningrad ) and Gumbinnen ( Russian Gussew ), Goldap ( Polish Gołdap ), Lyck (Ełk) and Lötzen (Giżycko) today however all have ceased operations.
In the station building in Węgorzewo, the 110th anniversary of the opening of the Rastenburg – Angerburg railway line and the 10th anniversary of the railway museum housed in the station building were celebrated on September 16, 2017.
