The Szabadbattyán – Tapolca railway line (also known as the North Balaton line ) is a single-track, non-electrified main line in Hungary . It is of little importance for freight traffic, but for express trains with bathers from Budapest.

History and future

A railway line from Budapest to Nagykanizsa was planned as early as 1850. The route should also serve the towns on Lake Balaton , but only those on the south bank. In 1861 the Budapest – Nagykanizsa railway was opened; however, the people on the north bank remained without a railroad.

With the construction of the Székesfehérvár – Veszprém – Szombathely – Graz railway in 1872, the Magyar Nyugati Vasút planned a railway line from Veszprém to Keszthely, which would then have run along the north bank. However, due to a lack of financial resources, the line was never built.

With the opening of the last section of the Tapolca – Ukk railway between Sümeg and Tapolca on May 16, 1891, the railway reached the north bank of Lake Balaton for the first time. On July 7, 1903, the railway line to Keszthely was opened.

In 1907 the construction of the railway line to Székesfehérvár began. It took 19 months to build the 117-kilometer route and the 26-kilometer branch from Alsóörs to Veszprém . Traffic began on July 1, 1909.

The electrification and expansion for higher speeds on the line is expected to begin at the end of 2016.

Vehicle use

Class 418 diesel locomotives in particular are used on express trains from Budapest . Passenger traffic between Székesfehérvár and Balatonfüred is handled by class 426 diesel multiple units. In the summer months until 2015, the scheduled E and D trains from Budapest to Tapolca were hauled by Soviet diesel locomotives of the series 628 and 651 and Swedish diesel locomotives of the series 2761 . The few freight traffic is carried with locomotives of the 418 or 628 series .
