The Baker River in New Hampshire is a 50 km long tributary of the Pemigewasset River in Grafton County . Other names of the river were Abocadneticook, Asquam Chommeock or Asquam Chumakee in different spellings. The Baker River has its source at Mount Moosilauke . From there it flows in a southerly and then easterly direction to the Pemigewasset. At Rumney the north and south arms unite, which arise in Orange . Like the mountain on which it arises, the Baker River lies in the extreme southwest of the White Mountains . It got its name from Lieutenant Thos. Baker, who led an expedition in 1712 into the then little explored northern hinterland of the colonies and pulled down the valley of the Baker River. In the area where the Baker flows into the Pemigewasset, there was a clash with indigenous people, in which several of them were killed. Another incident on the Baker River occurred on April 28, 1752, when John Stark was captured by Abnaki and taken to Canada with a companion. Plymouth, founded in 1763, lies at the confluence of the Baker in the Pemi .
