Balad ( Hebrew בל״ד, Acronym for Hebrew ברית לאומית דמוקרטית Brit le'umit democit "National Democratic Alliance"; Arabic التجمع الوطني الديمقراطي at-Tajammuʿ al-watanī ad-dīmuqrātī , DMG at-Taǧammuʿ al-waṭanī ad-dīmuqrāṭī ) is an Arab party in Israel . It wasfoundedin 1995 and works to ensure that Israel does not define itself as a “Jewish state”, but as a “state of all citizens”. The first letters of the Hebrew name of the party BLD led to the word formation Balad . Balad is also the Arabic word for country .

In 1999, party leader Asmi Bishara became the first Arab to run for prime ministerial elections, but withdrew his candidacy from the Labor Party after negotiations with Ehud Barak .

Participation in Knesset elections

In the elections to the 14th Knesset in 1996, the party ran together with Chadasch and won two seats, but towards the end of the legislative period both members left the party and formed their own parliamentary group . In the 1999 elections to the 15th Knesset, Balad won two seats, but the parliamentary group split during the legislative period. In the Knesset elections in 2003 and 2006, Balad won three seats each.

In 2009, the Israeli Central Election Committee initially decided to exclude Balad and the United Arab List's Ta'al Party from the February 10 Knesset election because they both incited violence, supported terrorism and did not recognize the State of Israel. The Supreme Court lifted this exclusion. In 2009 and 2013 , the party won three seats each. For the 2015 Knesset election , Balad merged with the United Arab List (Ra'am) , Ta'al and Chadasch to form the United List . The electoral alliance won a total of thirteen parliamentary seats.

For the Knesset election in 2019 , Balad and Ra'am formed a joint list that had four seats. For the election in September 2019 , a joint list of the four Arab parties Balad, Ra'am, Ta'al and Chadasch will again run.

Hanin Soabi is one of the well-known members of the Balad .
