Hanin Soabi (also: Hanin Zoabi or Haneen Zoubi ; Arabic حنين زعبي, DMG Ḥanīn Zuʿbī ; Hebrew חנין זועבי; * May 23, 1969 in Nazareth , Israel ) is an Israeli-Arab politician of the Balad party and was a member of the Knesset from 2009 to April 2019 .

Life

Hanin Soabi, who comes from a secular family, studied Psychology and Philosophy (BA) at the University of Haifa and “Communications and Media” (MA) at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem . Soabi is an Arab Israeli and the first woman on an Arab list to be elected to the Knesset.

In June 2010, after participating in the Free Gaza convoy aboard the Mavi Marmara , Soabi was attacked in the Knesset and received death threats; their personal protection was then strengthened.

At the next general assembly of the Knesset it was decided by 34 to 16 votes to deprive her of three parliamentary privileges due to her participation in the flotilla: the right to a diplomatic card, the right to financial support should she need legal assistance, and the right to grant countries visit with which Israel has no diplomatic relations.

For the parliamentary elections on January 22, 2013, the electoral commission denied her the right to stand as a candidate because of her participation in the Gaza aid fleet . However, the Israeli Supreme Court rejected the election commission's decision. She was re-elected.

Regarding the kidnapping of three Israeli youths by Hamas in July 2014, which sparked the Gaza war in 2014 , she stated on July 15, 2014 that the perpetrators were not terrorists, but that the circumstances under the occupation forced them to perform such actions. She was then banned from attending parliamentary sessions for six months. The Supreme Court dismissed their appeal.

Later it became known that the Israeli youths had been murdered and the Israeli army launched an attack on the Gaza Strip (" Operation Protective Edge "). Soabi was banned from attending parliamentary sessions for six months because of what she said in the interview. The Supreme Court dismissed their appeal.

Several petitions from right-wing Israeli parties try to prevent Soabi from running for the 2015 Knesset election. Soabi was allowed to run for office and was re-elected.

On the occasion of a commemoration of the Knesset on the 77th anniversary of the “ Reichskristallnacht ”, it equated this pogrom with Israel's policy towards the Palestinians.

In January 2019, Soabi announced that she would no longer run for the Knesset. Her withdrawal had been expected after Soabi finished fifth in the Balad's primary election and Balad was unlikely to win five seats in Israel's April 2019 general election .
