Baleswar ( Oriya ବାଲେଶ୍ବର Bāleśbar ; Anglicised: Balasore ) is a city in the Indian state of Odisha with around 118,000 inhabitants (2011 census). It is located on the east coast of India on the Burhabalanga River and is the capital of the administrative district of the same name .
history
In 1633, the British first settled in the place and founded their first settlement in what was then Bengal and a trading port that also served French, Dutch and Danish ships, whose East India companies later also established bases there. In the 18th century the port was an important hub for rice and salt . The Danish and Dutch possessions were ceded to the British by 1846, only the French remained in Baleswar until 1947, until the abandonment of their main trading base in Bengal in Chandannagar .
South of Baleswar (at 20 ° 59 ' latitude ) there is a launch site for sounding rockets and for military missile tests . Baleswar has been in operation since 1979 (489 launches until 2008), but in contrast to the one in the Satish Dhawan Space Center, it does not serve to launch satellites because the free water area to the east ( Bangladesh ) is insufficient.
