Ballivicar , also Ballyvicar , ( Gaelic : Baile a 'Bhiocair ) is a village on the Scottish Hebridean island of Islay and thus administratively belongs to the Council Area Argyll and Bute . Ballivicar is located in southern Islay about 2.5 kilometers northwest of the Port Ellen ferry terminal and 13 kilometers south of Bowmore , the island's capital. The closest settlement is Cornabus, several hundred meters southwest . Ballivicar is connected to the island's road network via a junction from the A846 . To the south, the stream Cornabus Burn, which flows out of Loch Muchairt, passes the town before it flows into the Atlantic Ocean at Kilnaughton Bay .
history
In 1841 39 people lived in Ballivicar. Ten years later the population had risen to 64 people. Today only a few houses of Ballivicar are still inhabited and Ballivicar is no longer recorded separately in current census data. The village essentially still consists of the Ballivicar Farm , a family-run farm that also offers holiday apartments.
Surroundings
To the northwest are the remains of a round hut. This was about five meters in diameter. Although large stones were found inside the structure, the masonry probably consisted essentially of loamy earth mixed with smaller stone material. The outer wall, which is up to three meters thick, is still preserved today up to a maximum height of one meter. The entrance was probably on the south side.
