The Bamberg Diocesan Museum is a museum that emerged from the old cathedral treasury of Bamberg Cathedral . It is located on the Domberg (Domplatz 5).

history

The museum is housed in the cathedral chapter house built by the baroque master builder Balthasar Neumann between 1731 and 1733. The first plans for a museum were made as early as 1907, but it wasn't until 1966 that it opened under the auspices of the Metropolitan Chapter . The showrooms were reopened in 1991 and 1992 and expanded in 2005.

collection

The focus of the collection is the Bamberg Cathedral Treasure and architectural sculptures of the Bamberg Cathedral. The museum also shows medieval vestments , Franconian sculptures from the late Gothic and Baroque periods, as well as religious folk art. The most important pieces in the museum include medieval textiles, including the starry cloak of Emperor Heinrich II , the cloak of Empress Kunigunde , the regalia of Pope Clement II and the so-called Gunther cloth , a silk fabric from Byzantium .

“ The cathedral's treasury

It contains sights of the first order. First and foremost are the three imperial coats from the 11th century. “Such pompous robes from the 11th / 12th centuries. The actual imperial, perhaps even coronation cloak of Henry II bears the dedication: “You adornment of Europe, Caesar Heinrich, be happy; May the heavenly King multiply your empire! ” Melus , Duke of Apulia, who asked the emperor to protect himself against the Saracens in Bamberg, brought the gift of honor. Kaiser Wilhelm II had himself dressed in this coat on a glass painting in the cathedral in Lüneburg.
