The Bandai-Asahi National Park ( Jap. 磐梯朝日国立公園 , Bandai Asahi Kokuritsu Kōen ) is a Japanese national park in the prefectures of Fukushima , Yamagata Prefecture and Niigata region Tōhoku on the island of Honshu in Japan. It has an area of ​​1870.41 km², making it the third largest national park in Japan. It was founded on September 5, 1950.

The national park consists of three spatially separated areas.

The southern part (Bandai-Azuma-Inawashiro) is characterized by the Bandai volcano group and the Azuma-yama . In the course of an eruption of the Bandai in 1888, several lakes were formed that can be visited by tourists on a hiking trail. Inawashiro Lake , Japan's fourth largest, is also located here .

The northernmost part is dominated by the Three Mountains of Dewa - Gassan, Haguro and Yudono. The stratovolcano Gassan reaches a height of 1984 meters. These mountains are considered sacred by members of the Shugendo religion. The shrines of this religion, which are located on the mountains, are visited by numerous pilgrims.

There are five mountains higher than 2000 meters in the south-western sub-area: Dainichi (2128 m), Iide (2105 m), Eboshi (2017 m), Kitamata (2025 m) and Onishi (2013 m). Snow lies on these mountains for much of the year.

Flora and fauna

In the national park u. a. Ruffed Bear , Sika Deer and Serau . The tree species that characterize the landscape are the umbrella fir , the Hinoki false cypress , the sickle fir and the Hiba tree of life . Typical flower types are the arnica type Arnica unalaschcensis and the endemic globe flower Trollius hondoensis . The orchid species habenaria radiata occurs in boggy areas in the north of the park .
