history

Muar has a long history as mentioned in many historical records. It is believed that the story of Muar began even before the Sultanate of Malacca. Many accounts of the early history of Muar have been recorded. Around the year 1361, it was claimed in the poem Nagarakretagam a that Muar was part of the Majapahit Empire . It was occupied by Parameswara , the founder of the Malay Sultanate of Malacca , in the 14th century AD . Today's Muar was also the place where the deposed ruler of the sultanate fled in 1511 after the Portuguese invasion, which was started from Goa . During the invasion and attack by the Portuguese of Afonso de Albuquerque in 1511, Muar played a role in resisting the Portuguese occupation of Malacca until the area finally fell. The area later came under the rule of the British Empire , but remained under the de facto control of local rulers for a long time.

The modern city of Muar, known as Bandar Maharani, was founded in 1887 and became one of the first cities in Malaya to have a rail link. During the Japanese invasion of the Malay Peninsula , the city was captured by the Japanese in the important Battle of Muar and remained under their occupation until 1945.

Sultan Ibrahim Ismail of Johor declared Muar the new royal city of Johor on February 5, 2012, replacing Johor Bahru . This coincided with the Maulidur Rasul celebrations. Ibrahim also became the first ruler of Johor, who held his birthday celebrations on November 22, 2012 in Muar. He chose the city because of its “rich history and tradition alongside peaceful, beautiful and progressive” characteristics (“rich in history and tradition besides being peaceful, beautiful and progressive”) and called on the state government to record all old buildings in the city and to be designated as State Heritage .
