Ibrahim Ismail from Johor
Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar (full salutation: Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Baginda Al-Mutawakkil Alallah Sultan Iskandar Al-Haj , Arabic سلطان ابراهيم اسماعيل, Born November 22, 1958 in Johor , Malaya Federation ) is the 25th Sultan of Johor and the 5th Sultan of modern Johor. He is the son of Sultan Iskandar . Known as a motorcycle enthusiast, he founded the annual Kembara Mahkota Johor motorcycle touring race .
Life
youth
Ibrahim Ismail was born on November 22nd, 1958, under the reign of his great-grandfather, Sultan Ibrahim . He is the eldest son of Sultan Iskandar and his first wife Josephine Ruby Trevorrow , an Englishwoman from Torquay . The two met when Iskandar (then “Tunku Mahmud”) was studying in England . Trevorrow, who owns a textile company, took the name "Kalsom binti Abdullah" at that time. She later divorced, is remarried and lives in England.
The great-grandfather, Sultan Ibrahim, died in London on May 8, 1959. When Tunku Ibrahim Ismail's grandfather, Ismail von Johor , became sultan, Ibrahim Ismail took second place in the line of succession after his father.
His father, Sultan Iskandar, sent Ibrahim to complete his university education at Trinity Grammar School in Sydney , Australia (1968-1970). After graduating there, he received basic military training at the Pusat Latihan Tentera Darat Military Academy (PULADA) in Kota Tinggi . Further military training took place in the United States in Fort Benning , Georgia and later in Fort Bragg , North Carolina .
Tunku Ibrahim Ismail was named "Tunku Mahkota" by Johor on July 4, 1981 and has since lived mainly in the Istana Pasir Pelangi . He represented his father as regent from April 26, 1984 to April 25, 1989, as long as he was in office as Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia. He then gradually took over some of the official business and functions from his aging father; Among other things, he organized the 211th “Conference of Rulers”, at which Tunku Ibrahim and Tengku Abdullah , the Tengku Mahkota of Pahang , each represented their fathers in the talks.
Sultan of Johor
A few hours before his father's death on January 22, 2010, Tunku Ibrahim was installed as regent of Johor after doctors announced the sultan's imminent demise. Sultan Iskandar died that same night and Tunku Ibrahim was proclaimed Sultan of Johor the next morning. The "Menteri Besar" (Chief Minister) of Johor, Abdul Ghani Othman , announced that Sultan Ibrahim and the immediate family members would observe a mourning period of 40 days. During the mourning period, Sultan Ibrahim made his first appearance as ruler at the Conference of Rulers in February 2010.
On June 30, 2011, Sultan Ibrahim steered the last train out of Tanjong Pagar Railway Station after receiving instructions from Chief Locomotive Inspector Hasnol Azahari Aman of Keretapi Tanah Melayu . It was his personal wish, especially since his grandfather Ismail had opened the connection between Singapore and Malaya in 1923.
On February 5, 2012, he declared Muar to be the new royal city of Johor, replacing Johor Bahru . This coincided with the Maulidur Rasul celebrations.
Ibrahim also became the first ruler of Johor, who held his birthday celebrations on November 22, 2012 in Muar. He chose the city because of its “rich history and tradition alongside peaceful, beautiful and progressive” characteristics (“rich in history and tradition besides being peaceful, beautiful and progressive”) and called on the state government to record all old buildings in the city and to be designated as State Heritage . He also pushed for the Sungai Muar River to be kept clean and for bus and taxi stations to be relocated.
On March 23, 2015, he was crowned Sultan of Johor. The last coronation before that took place on February 10, 1960, when his grandfather Sultan Ismail was crowned. Since 2015, March 23rd has been made a public holiday and is the official birthday of the Sultan, which is why the birthday celebrations on November 22nd have been abolished.
Ibrahim Ismail is known for his religious moderation and for his criticism of the creeping Arabization of Muslim culture in Malaysia. Despite being the only sultan in Malaysia with no tertiary (post-graduate) education, the sultan is known for his serious interest in improving the education of his subjects.
Decrees
As head of state, he has the right to enact various laws. Some of its enactments are listed below:
Moving the weekend from Saturday / Sunday to Friday / Saturday
In Johor , the weekend on Friday and Saturday was originally celebrated together with the former Unfederated Malay States (standalone British protectorates) Perlis , Kedah , Kelantan and Terengganu , contrary to the custom of the former Federated Malay States as well as Malacca , Penang , Sabah and Sarawak and the Federal Territories , where the weekend was celebrated on Saturday and Sunday. Johor and Perlis moved the weekend on January 1, 1994 to Saturday and Sunday in order to synchronize with Singapore and Kuala Lumpur , as these countries were going through rapid industrialization at that time .
On November 22, 2013, on the occasion of his birthday celebrations, Sultan Ibrahim issued a decree that Johor would move the weekend back to Friday and Saturday to allow Muslims in the state to attend Friday prayers . The law came into force on January 1, 2014. This decree caused controversy, among other things because it led to trade difficulties with Singapore.
Renaming
In August 2015, Sultan Ibrahim changed the name of the Kulaijaya district to the original "Kulai" and Nusajaya was renamed "Iskandar Puteri" and Ledang into " Tangkak ".
Ban on electronic cigarettes
With a further decree, Sultan Ibrahim banned electronic cigarettes (vape) in Johor from January 1, 2016. Soon after, similar laws were passed in Kelantan and Terengganu .
Prohibition of oversized billboards
In January 2016, the Sultan passed a law restricting billboards to 6.1 mx 1.2 m in order to avoid danger to the public and not to spoil the cities.
Controversy
Allegations of criminal behavior
Sultan Ibrahim's reputation has been marred by some misconduct since the 1980s, but less than that of his father, Sultan Iskandar, who achieved considerable media coverage through various appearances. In the 1980s, he was charged with shooting a man during a nightclub scuffle, but was soon pardoned.
In 1992 or early 1993, Tunku Ibrahim was also involved in outbreaks of violence in connection with the "Gomez Affair", during which his father and younger brother, Tunku Majid , were charged with two physical attacks that caused great national unrest and led to constitutional changes , according to which members of the royal family can also be prosecuted for criminal activities. One of the victims, Rahim Mohd Nor, described the attacks by Tunku Ibrahim as sadism.
In March 2005, a member of the Malaysian royal family allegedly attacked a young woman, "Yasmin", out of jealousy. The victim's father, Mohd Yasin , later claimed that the then-Tunku Ibrahim was the perpetrator.
More incidents
Shortly before the assassination of the Filipino politician Benigno Aquino junior in August 1983, Tunku Ibrahim met with him in Singapore and put him in contact with Malaysian leaders. In Johor, Aquino also met Sultan Iskandar, with whom he was close friends.
In October 2005, a brawl broke out in Pulau Rawa after a Prince of Johor apparently intruded at a wedding party. The prince expelled some of the guests from the island after a fight over a woman took place. Local residents, feeling offended, initially left, but soon returned with golf clubs and guns. Several guests were wounded and hospitalized. However, the names of the culprits were kept secret by the police. The Tunku Mahkota (Crown Prince) published a notice calling on the guilty to apologize.
The following June press reports were published that Tunku Ibrahim had collected traffic fines of RM 26,700 since 2000 .
In addition, Tunku Ibrahim spent a lot of money on special vehicle license plates . In May 2012 he offered 520,000 RM for the license plate with the digits WWW 1 for his red-orange Satria Neo . In January 2014 he paid 748,000 RM for the registration with the numeric W1N for his blue Proton Suprima S .
Economic activities
Despite his monthly salary of 27,000 RM (about 5,600 euros), Sultan Ibrahim participated in various companies: RedTone (20% of the shares), MOL AccessPortal (15% stakes), RedTone International (20% of the shares), 7Eleven Malaysia (8, 5%), Berjaya Assets, Umobile (15% stake), Berjaya Time Square (20% stake) and land sale of 116 ha to Guangzhou R&F for $ 4.5 billion. and Benalec Holdings land reclamation in Pengarang, Tanjung Piai for petroleum refineries and industrial parks, Country Garden's land reclamation by Tanjung Kupang for Forest City .
