Mahmud Iskandar Al-Haj
Sultan Mahmud Iskandar Al-Haj ibni Ismail Al-Khalidi (born April 8, 1932 in Johor Bahru , Malaysia ; † January 22, 2010 ibid) was from April 26, 1984 to April 25, 1989 the eighth Yang di-Pertuan Agong (King of Malaysia). From 1981 until his death he was the 24th Sultan of Johor . He was considered a lover of polo, golf and hunting.
Life
Iskandar von Johor was born in 1932 as the son of Sultan Ismail and was thus a descendant of Sultan Abu Bakar . In 1956 he married the British Josephine Trevorrow, the marriage was divorced again in 1962. The marriage had four children. Shortly before the divorce from his first wife, he married Tengku Zanariah, who came from the noble Kelantan family.
On May 11, 1981 he was proclaimed the 24th Sultan of Johor and on February 9, 1984 he was ordinarily elected King of Malaysia for five years .
Coup plans
Shortly before his election to Yang-di-Pertuan Agong in 1984, reports of alleged coup plans came up in 1983. A state of emergency should be imposed on the country and the government overthrown. The Sultan was also reported to have close ties with key figures in the military. These reports reached the then Prime Minister Mahathir bin Mohamad . As a result, there were plans to amend the Malaysian constitution, which included curtailing the power of the king in the legislative process. That led to the constitutional crisis in 1983. Nevertheless, Iskandar assured in his inaugural address in 1984 that he would support the planned constitutional changes.
Gomez incident
In 1992 the Sultan was directly and indirectly involved in two affairs. One affair concerned his son Tunku Abdul Majid Idris, who attacked the goalkeeper of the opposing team with a hockey stick out of anger over the defeat in a hockey game. The Malaysian Hockey Federation took on the case and Iskandar's son was ultimately suspended for five years. In a criminal case, Tunku Abdul Majid was sentenced to one year in prison and paid 2000 ringgit . He was released on bail, and all charges were dropped due to his immunity, which was in effect at the time of the crime.
In response to the suspension of games against his son, the Sultan put pressure on the authorities to keep Johor hockey teams away from national competitions. A coach for a hockey team from the state of Johor, Douglas Gomez, expressed displeasure in November 1992 at the forced absence from national competitions. When the Sultan found out, he summoned the trainer to his palace and then assaulted him. The victim suffered injuries to his stomach and face. This incident became known nationally as the "Gomez Incident".
Iskandar died on January 22, 2010 at the age of 77 in his birthplace, Johor Bahru.
