description
The two-story building stands at the junction of Seafield Street and Castle Street ( A98 ) in central Banff across from Banff Castle . Elgin- based architect Thomas Mackenzie was responsible for the design of the building, which was erected between 1851 and 1854 . The two-story building is designed in the historicizing Italianate style . Its east-facing main facade along Castle Street is five axes wide. A lower, also two-story extension follows along Seafield Street.
The masonry consists of uneven, dark cuboids with contrasting cream-colored natural stone surrounds . In the center is the two-winged entrance portal ornamented with Doric columns and pilasters . Flanking entrances lead to the shops with their pilastrated shop windows. The high, twelve-part lattice windows on the upper floor are balustrated and crowned with triangular gables . These rest on Ionic pilasters, the capitals of which are unusually ornamented with sculptured heads of the queen. A deep cornice runs around below the final hipped roof . Along Seafield Street, two eaves chimneys are connected by an arched arcade .
