history

The Banus Palace in October 1895

The town house was Baron Ferdinand von Kulm beginning of the 19th century building. In an unfinished state, the building was bought by the Kingdom of Croatia-Slavonia and renovated until 1809. An apartment was set up on the first floor as the residence of the Croatian Banu. Ban Josip Jelačić (1801-1859), who is considered a national hero in Croatia, lived and died here . A single-storey palace was later attached to the building on the north side .

In the early 1990s, part of the Banus Palace was also the official residence of the Croatian President . On October 7, 1991, the Banauspalais was fired at by fighter planes of the Serb- led Yugoslav People's Army with rockets . At that time, the first Croatian President Franjo Tuđman and the President of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia Stjepan Mesić were in the building, who narrowly escaped death. In the attack one person was killed and four others were injured. Thereupon the Republic of Croatia declared itself independent on October 8, 1991 and broke off all diplomatic relations with Yugoslavia. Today the Presidential Palace ( Predsjednički dvori ) is the official seat of the President, immediately adjacent to the city center at the foot of the Medvednica Mountains in the posh Pantovčak district .
