Baptist Mudartha

Baptist Mudartha (born September 9, 1911 in Balegundi near Mangaluru , Karnataka , India , † May 30, 2007 in Allahabad ) was bishop of the Allahabad diocese in India.

Life

Baptist Mudartha was the third child of Joseph Mudartha and Martina Mudartha. He attended St. Joseph's Higher Primary School in Belman and St. Aloysius College in Mangaluru. In 1933 he joined the seminary Sitapur Minor Seminary and later the St. Joseph's Seminary for philosophical studies. From 1937 to 1941 he studied Catholic theology in Rome . Baptist Mudartha was ordained a priest in 1942 . Since he was unable to return to India during the war, he completed his licentiate in philosophy with the title The Concept of God in Islam . In 1944 he returned to India as a Latin teacher at the Sitapur Minor Seminary. In 1946 he became professor of Indian and Western philosophy at St. Joseph's Seminary in Allahabad.

In 1962 he became vicar general in Allahabad. In 1963 he was appointed auxiliary bishop in the diocese of Jhansi and titular bishop of Idebessus at the side of Francis Xavier Fenech . He was ordained bishop on October 20, 1963 by Pope Paul VI. personally, co-consecrators were the Curia Archbishops Pietro Sigismondi and Sergio Pignedoli . On November 29, 1967 Baptist Mudartha was born to Paul VI. appointed first Indian bishop of Jhansi. On May 1, 1976, he became Bishop of Allahabad, succeeding Alfred Fernández . Pope John Paul II accepted his resignation in 1988.

Mudartha founded numerous schools. His penchant for Hindi prompted him to publish the theological lexicon Masih Shabd Sangraha in English and Hindi in 1997. For this he received the Hindi Sahitya Ratna award , the Mother Teresa Award from All India Social and Literary, the Cultural Organization EKTA from Allahabad and the Varist Naagarik Samman , Allahabad.

He died at the age of 96 in Nazareth Hospital in Allahabad.
