Barakamon ( Japanese ば ら か も ん ) is a manga series by the illustrator Satsuki Yoshino , which has been published in Japan since 2008. It was implemented as an anime television series in 2014 and falls into the genres of Comedy and Slice of Life . She received a spin-off called Handa-kun , which was also implemented as an anime series.

The term barakamon describes a lively person in the dialect of the Goto Islands .

action

Seishū Handa ( 半 田 清 舟 ) is already a professional calligraphy artist at the age of 23 and has had some success. But when a curator judges his work to be too conservative and in line with the textbook, he beats it out of affect. His father, also a successful calligrapher, then sent him to the Goto Islands so that he could learn humility and his own style. When he gets there, Handa is initially amazed at the backwardness of the village and the expressions of the villagers. But he is also shown a lot of hospitality.

However, his house is "occupied" by the seven-year-old Naru Kotoishi ( 琴 石 な る ), who plays there with her friends. Handa can move in, but Naru and others keep returning to the house, causing unrest. Naru himself quickly takes the solitary Handa to the heart and wants to cheer him up. This keeps him from work, but Handa also begins to like the girl and her friends. Hiroshi Kido ( 木 戸 浩 志 ), the youthful son of the village chairman, often brings the artist food that his mother has cooked for him and also befriends Handa. The two middle school students Hiroshi Kido ( 木 戸 浩 志 ) and Tamako Arai ( 新 井 珠子 ) also often come by, often accompanied by Naru, and let Handa instruct them in calligraphy. So the artist begins to like country life and makes friends, something he had not known before.

At first, Handa is horrified when he only comes second in a competition with a new work - behind an even younger artist. His friend and manager Takao Kawafuji ( 川 藤 鷹 生 ) visits him, along with the younger artist who is a fan of Handa. Finally, Handa gets over his defeat and can also overcome his creative block. Handa returns to Tokyo soon after. It is now difficult for him to say goodbye. Handa succeeds in apologizing to the curator and submits works in his new style to competitions. Although this time he only achieved worse placements, he is now motivated and is going back to the island to continue working there.
