The Baransky volcanic complex ( Russian Вулкан Баранского , named after Nikolai Baranski ; also known under the name Sashiusu-dake ) is located on the Pacific coast of Russia in the central part of the island of Iturup and consists of an eroded volcano from the Pleistocene and an overlying stratovolcano from the Holocene . The summit area is formed by a lava dome and a chain of several craters oriented from north to west. Several lava flows reached the Pacific coast on a broad front in the southeast of the volcano. The only historically known outbreak occurred in 1951 when local people reported explosive activity in the summit area, where solfataras can still be seen today . On the southwest flank is an area of thermal activity, hot water springs and geysers .
