Nikolay Baransky ( Russian Николай Николаевич Баранский ; born July 15 . Jul / 27. July  1881 greg. In Tomsk ; † 29. November 1963 in Moscow ) was a Russian economist and geographer .

Life

The son of a high school teacher studied from 1897–1901 at the law faculty of the University in Tomsk . Baranski made his first contact with geography with a thesis on the Altai Mountains. Because of his involvement in illegal political activities, he had to serve several prison terms and had to change his place of residence several times. Through this he got to know the Russian Empire from Karelia to the Far East. In the years 1910 to 1914, he graduated from the School of Economics in Moscow . He was employed by the Bolsheviks as a financial auditor in the workers and peasants inspection. This activity was again connected with a frequent change of his whereabouts. In 1925 he built up the branch of economic geography in the Moscow universities and wrote textbooks on the economic geography of the Soviet Union . His books have appeared both as university textbooks and school books in 20 languages ​​of the Soviet Union. In 1935 Baranski received his doctorate in geographic sciences and from then on dealt with the didactics of geography. In the same year he founded the renowned magazine Geographie in Schule . He also promoted school cartography and initiated the development of geographical educational films. Baranski was also a co-founder of the Great Soviet Encyclopedia Publishing House . Baranski was awarded the Stalin Prize in 1951 .

Baranski did a lot of research in the field of economic geography with an economic foundation and strong regional references and was an eloquent lecturer . The Baransky volcano on the Kuril Islands was named after him.
