Life

After training at the Stuttgart University of Music and Performing Arts , she played at the city and state theaters of Freiburg, Essen and Stuttgart. In 1993 she returned to her native Frankfurt am Main and initially played in changing, free groups until she founded her first own group, Primadonna / Schwerer Held, with its own venue in the Frankfurt bread factory .

Her focus is on the representation of great women from the past and present, such as Schiller's Die Jungfrau von Orleans or Petra Kelly in the play Primadonna / Schwerer Held by Wolfgang Spielvogel . She was awarded first prize for this at the Politics im Freie Theater festival in 1996 and was a member of the jury the following year. As a director, she worked on theater plays with young people, such as the specially written I and my uncle by Wolfgang Spielvogel, with Turks and Kurds about the personal history of the participants, and Don Karlos from Friedrich Schiller with secondary school students. Each project is staged by her socio-political view of contemporary phenomena with a special emphasis on the role of women. In her readings, some of which are staged, she presents classical and contemporary texts. Since 2004 she has headed the theater be , under whose trademark she has realized cross-disciplinary projects with video artists, dancers and musicians. Your stagings also include room, light and sound installations. After expanding the stage space in various projects with partners from other art directions, she planned new projects that leave the stage space and turn public space into a stage. With her brother, the photo artist Alexander Paul Englert and the author Jutta Kaußen , she worked on the photo art project MOMENTUM. Poet in Scenes , who examined the positions of German-speaking authors through visual art.

Barbara Englert is married to the political cabaret artist Hilde Wackerhagen .
