Barbara Klein and the Kosmos Theater

One of their core concerns is active gender democracy in all areas, especially in art and culture. In 1996 she developed the concept "Link. * Frauenraum" with the aim of sensitizing the public to gender symmetry in art and culture and implementing a theater and cultural center for women artists. The motto “Women need space” led to the establishment of the association “Link. * Association for female play space” in 1998 and subsequently to the 10-day artistic occupation of the former Rondell porn cinema. This was followed by months of flash mob-like actions, occupations and politically creative interventions in and in front of the responsible cultural offices and in public space. An alliance of feminist activists and artists, including Elfriede Jelinek , Robert Menasse , Christine Nöstlinger , Marlene Streeruwitz and Josef Hader, whose stubborn and original forms of protest repeatedly publicized the issue, ultimately led to success. The right premises were found and the necessary funding was approved by four funding agencies. After a conversion from a cinema to a theater, for which Barbara Klein was responsible as the client, the “Construction Site Festival” took place on March 8, International Women's Day, a 24-hour art event with the participation of hundreds of female artists. Finally, the KosmosTheater opened - initially as kosmos.frauenraum - on May 15, 2000 with a speech by Elfriede Jelinek. Until March 2018, Barbara Klein headed KosmosTheater as artistic and commercial manager and occasionally directed. On April 1, 2018, Veronika Steinböck followed her as artistic director and Gina Salis-Soglio as business director of Kosmos Theater.
