Barbara Schellhammer

Barbara Schellhammer (born 1977 in Munich ) is a German cultural philosopher . She researched and worked in Canada for several years .

Live and act

Barbara Schellhammer studied social work with a focus on systemic family therapy at the University of Munich .

From 2005 to 2015 she lived and worked in Canada and taught in Victoria, BC , at the Royal Roads University (School of Peace and Conflict Studies) in the field of Alternative Dispute Resolution and Restorative Justice . In 2005 and 2006 she conducted research among the Inuit tribe in the Northwest Territories of Canada ( Inuvik , Ulukhaktok and Paulatuk ). She trained as a coach (Erickson College, Vancouver ) and received the mediation certificate from the Pulse Institute, Calgary .

In 2009 she did her doctorate at the Munich University of Philosophy . In her doctoral thesis Density Description in the Arctic. Clifford Geertz and the Inuit Cultural Revolution in Northern Canada , she brings together her research and experience as a social worker in the Northwest Territories of Canada with the dense description of Clifford Geertz .

In 2009 she was offered a position at the International YMCA Kassel , where she was professor for international and intercultural social work until 2013. In 2013 she returned to the Munich School of Philosophy . In 2019 the university appointed her to the chair for “Intercultural Social Transformation”. She researches and teaches on topics of cultural philosophy , self-care, peace work and conflict transformation and other topics of intercultural philosophy and (adult) education .

In 2018 she completed her habilitation at the University of Hildesheim ( venia legendi Kulturphilosophie) with the habilitation thesis Foreignness Experiences and Concern for oneself. Studies on the development of a person's ability to be foreign.

At the University of Philosophy, like at the Royal Roads University in Canada and the CVJM University in Kassel, she develops internet-based teaching-learning scenarios for adult education ( e-, m- and blended learning ). In addition to publishing several books and articles, she organized the Culture conference in 2016 . A life of learning. From 2017 to 2018 she was Academic Director Europe & Middle East for Jesuit Worldwide Learning.

Since autumn 2019, she has been the first professor at the University of Philosophy to hold the chair for Intercultural Social Transformation . The chair was newly created and initially set up for five years. In addition, Schellhammer took over the management of the Center for Global Issues at the School of Philosophy.
