Barbara Schlag (born August 9, 1951 in Vechta ) is a German politician (ZoB). From 2001 to 2016 she was mayor of the independent municipality of Norden (East Frisia) .

Life

Barbara Schlag attended the Freiherr-vom-Stein-Gymnasium in Betzdorf and the Hilda-Gymnasium in Koblenz , where she graduated from high school . She then studied from 1970 to 1973 teaching primary school at the University of Applied Sciences Muenster . She spent her traineeship in Essen . From 1974 to 2001 she was a teacher at the secondary school in Norden.

She has a son and two daughters.

Political career

From 1994 she became politically active as a founding member of the Free Voting Association ZoB ( Future-Oriented Citizens North / North Dike ). In the local elections in 1996 she was elected to the city council of the city of Norden, where she was group chairman of the ZoB. From 1998 she was honorary, from 2001 full-time mayor of Norden, as the successor to Fritz Fuchs ( SPD ). Until 2001 there was still a city director in the north. This office was exercised by Reiner Alberts. Since the mayor’s office became full-time, the mayor has also been city director.

In the 2001 mayoral election, Schlag received 47.2 percent of the vote. In 2006 she was re-elected for eight years with 61.7 percent of the vote. ZoB is part of the city council of the north in coalition with the CDU and FDP . In the 2014 mayoral election, Schlag won the runoff election on June 15, 2014 with 50.53 percent of the valid votes. She did not run for the mayoral election in Norden in 2016 and announced the end of her term of office on October 31, 2016. Heiko Schmelzle (CDU) was her successor in the north .

Memberships

As mayoress of the north, Barbara Schlag was, among other things, a member of the supervisory board of the business operations of the city of Norden, a member of the shareholders' meeting of the Disabled Aid North and was 1st deputy chairwoman of the Association for Research and Conservation of the Seal, which also operates the Norddeich seal station . Furthermore, she sits on the board of directors of Sparkasse Aurich-Norden , on the boards of the communal fire extinguishing cost compensation in East Friesland and the northern drainage association.
