Heiko Schmelzle (born March 24, 1970 in Westerstede ) is a German politician ( CDU ) and mayor of the north .

Family and work

Schmelzle grew up with three sisters in Norden . In 1986/87 he completed a year abroad with the American Field Service (AFS) in the USA, which he completed in 1987 with an American school diploma (high school diploma). In 1990 he graduated from the Ulrichsgymnasium in Norden. He then completed an apprenticeship as a banker in Düsseldorf . From 1992 to 1993 he completed his military service, which he extended to months as a so-called soldier. In 1995 he switched to a regional credit institute, where he worked until he moved into the German Bundestag in 2013. In 1996 he trained as a savings bank specialist and in 1999 as a savings bank manager. Later he also passed the examination as an insurance specialist at the IHK Bremen. For many years he worked in the mortgage lending business, first as a clerk, later as a consultant and branch manager. Since 2004 he has worked in asset management. He is also a part-time lecturer for the basics of income tax and construction finance for the Lower Saxony Savings Bank Academy in Hanover .

Schmelzle has been married since 2000 and has two children.

politics

In 1991 Heiko Schmelzle became a member of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). Since 2011 he has been a councilor in the North City Council. Since 2012 he has been chairman of the CDU North and deputy chairman of the Aurich CDU district association. On November 27, 2015 Schmelzle was elected to the federal executive committee of the East and Central German Association (OMV) of the CDU for the first time. He took over the office of Deputy Federal Chairman.

In the federal election on September 22, 2013 , he ran as a direct candidate for the CDU in the federal constituency of Aurich - Emden in East Frisia . He moved into the German Bundestag via the state list of the Lower Saxony CDU . In the 18th legislative period of the German Bundestag he was a full member of the Committee on Health , where he was rapporteur for Europe and international affairs. He was also a deputy member of the European Committee.

In addition to his committee work, he is involved in the CDU / CSU parliamentary group in the SME parliamentary group (PKM) and in the group of expellees, resettlers and German minorities. He is also a member of the Coast Working Group, an association of CDU members of the Bundestag from the five coastal states of Schleswig-Holstein, Lower Saxony, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the Free Hanseatic City of Hamburg and the Hanseatic City of Bremen. As a member of the Association of Reservists of the German Federal Armed Forces, he is still a member of the cross-party reservists working group of the German Bundestag.

Heiko Schmelze ran for the mayor's office in Norden in the local elections in Lower Saxony on September 11, 2016 . On September 25, 2016, he won the election of mayor of the East Frisian city of Norden in a runoff election against Julia Feldmann . At the end of October 31, 2016, he left the Bundestag. Rainer Hajek moved up for him .
