East and Central German Association

The East and Central German Association (OMV) is the internal party representation of the interests of those members of the CDU and CSU who come from the former German eastern territories or the former Soviet occupation zone .

aims

The aim of OMV is to maintain the culture of remembrance as well as to work for a common experience of cultural, linguistic and regional diversity, with special consideration of minority rights. It sees itself as a mouthpiece for the expellees and resettlers of German ethnic groups from Central and Eastern Europe and has the goal of creating and strengthening a connection with and through its members to the neighboring states to the east.

history

The forerunners of OMV emerged in the immediate post-war period . Since 1946, attempts have been made within the Union to pool the concerns of refugees and displaced persons in refugee committees. On 27./28. April 1948 the first Reich meeting of the state refugee committees of the CDU and CSU took place in Braunschweig .

In 1968 the CDU federal party congress decided to merge these refugee committees with the regional association Oder / Neisse (see also: Oder-Neisse border ) that was established in 1950 . The party's newly formed association was named Union of Displaced Persons and Refugees (UdVF). At this time there were also considerations to unite the CDU in exile with the UdVF. However, this was not implemented. In the 1970s, the UdVF became increasingly active against the Ostpolitik of the social-liberal coalition . The right of self-determination of Germans and the right to a homeland were emphasized again and again .

In 1981 the UdVF was renamed the East and Central German Association. While at that time it had its highest membership level with almost 30,000 members in the CDU and 10,000 members in the CSU, there was a decline in membership in the following years. This was primarily due to the falling number of those directly affected by flight and displacement in the post-war period. OMV tried to compensate for the resulting loss of importance by increasing the representation of interests for resettlers and repatriates .

Inner structure

In the CSU, the organization is called Union of Displaced Persons (UdV) and, as a working group of the party, has around 10,000 members.

In individual CDU regional associations, the OMV continues to bear its old name, Union of Displaced Persons and Refugees (UdVF) (e.g. Baden-Württemberg and Hesse ).

Regional associations and regional chairmen

OMV is divided into 15 regional associations.

Regional association of North Rhine-Westphalia

The largest regional association is the OMV of the CDU NRW, with over 2000 members, whose current goals include:

  1. The establishment of a evacuation memorial on a part of the site of the former Unna-Massen office.
  2. The re-establishment of a chair for the history and culture of Germans in Eastern Europe by setting the topic in the catalog of objectives for university education.
  3. The social education about the "consequences of communist ideologies, especially the processing of the GDR dictatorship".

The organ of the regional association is the OMV Report, which appears twice a year.
