The Barkly River is a river in eastern Gippsland in the Australian state of Victoria .

It rises below Mount Kinty , part of the Great Dividing Range at an altitude of 672 m at the confluence of the Barkly River East Branch and Barkly River West Branch . The 12.9 km long eastern source river has its source at The Nobs Spur at an altitude of 1370 m, the western source river below Mount McDonald at an altitude of 1440 m and is 12.8 km long.

The Barkly River initially flows south and turns east just before its mouth . It flows into the Macalister River after 29.6 km .

Tributaries

On its way it takes up the tributaries Sardine Creek coming from the east , the Mount Skene Creek coming from the west and shortly before its confluence with the Macalister River the Glencaim Creek coming from the north .

The Barkly River and its tributaries lie in largely uninhabited mountainous areas of the Great Dividing Range . 8 km north of the confluence with the Macalister River is the small town of Glencaim on the tributary Glencaim Creek .
