The Macalister River is a river in central Gippsland in the Australian state of Victoria .

It rises on the southern slope of Mount Howitt in the Great Dividing Range and flows through the Alpine National Park to the southwest and then to the south on the western boundary of the park. North of Glenmaggie it flows into Lake Glenmaggie and then at Heyfield into the Thomson River .

Surname

The river was named by its discoverer Angus McMillan after his employer at the time.
