Barnim V. (* around 1369 ; † 1402 or 1403 ) was a duke of Pomerania-Stolp .

Life

Barnim V was the youngest son of Duke Bogislaw V of Pommern-Stolp and his second wife Adelheid von Braunschweig-Grubenhagen, a daughter of Duke Ernst I. After the death of his father in 1373, he stood with his brothers Wartislaw VII. and Bogislaw VIII. under the tutelage of their half-brother Casimir IV.

After Kasimir's death in 1377, the brothers jointly took control of the partial duchy of Stolp in Western Pomerania. Barnim studied at the University of Prague , where he was enrolled at the Faculty of Law for Canon Law in 1387 , so apparently he was aiming for a clerical office at the time. In 1392 he returned to Pomerania.

The politics of the brothers Wartislaw VII., Bogislaw VIII. And Barnim V fluctuated between Poland and the Teutonic Order . When the Polish king withheld the Dobrin land , which had belonged to Casimir, they allied themselves with the Teutonic Order. In 1390, however, they switched back to Poland's side against the Teutonic Order and on November 2, 1390, Wartislaw VII swore the Polish king Władysław II Jagiełło the feudal oath .

Wartislaw VII was murdered in 1394/1395. Now the brothers Bogislaw VIII and Barnim V ruled together. Barnim's marriage to a Lithuanian princess in 1396 shows his rapprochement with Lithuania and Poland. Disagreements between the two brothers led in 1402 to the agreement of a division in which Barnim was to receive the area around Stolp , Schlawe and Neustettin . Barnim died soon afterwards in 1402/1403, so that the agreed division had no consequences. Now Bogislaw VIII ruled alone in Pomerania-Stolp. It is not known where Duke Barnim V was buried.

marriage

Barnim married Hedwig of Lithuania († after 1405) in 1396, a relative of the Grand Duke Witold of Lithuania. The marriage remained childless.
