Casimir IV , after another count Casimir V (* around 1345 ; † January 2, 1377 in Bromberg ) was a Duke of Pomerania from the Greifenhaus .

Life and accomplishments

Casimir IV was the eldest son of Duke Bogislaw V of Pomerania-Stolp and his wife Elisabeth , the eldest daughter of King Casimir the Great of Poland. Kasimir was born around 1345 (according to Martin Wehrmann ) or more precisely in 1351 (according to Roderich Schmidt ). He was brought up at the court of his grandfather, King Casimir, in Cracow , as was his sister Elisabeth , who later married Emperor Charles IV . After 1364, King Casimir adopted his grandson and intended to succeed him on the Polish royal throne. He also made him the heir of important lands in northern Poland, namely the Dobrin country and the Lenczyce and Sieradz countries.

After the death of his grandfather in 1370, it was not Casimir but King Louis the Great of Hungary who became King of Poland. From King Casimir's inheritance, King Ludwig only released part of the lands intended for him, namely the Dobriner Land and the castle districts of Bromberg , Flatow and Deutsch Krone , which Duke Casimir took as a fief. In addition, after the death of his father in 1374, Casimir took over the rule in the Duchy of Pomerania-Stolp, as guardian of his younger half-brothers, the Dukes Wartislaw VII , Bogislaw VIII and Barnim V.

Casimir IV fought for King Ludwig against Duke Wladislaw the White of Kuyavia. Here he was wounded by a stone throw in front of Zlotorya Castle and died soon afterwards on January 2, 1377 in Bromberg . He was buried in the Cistercian monastery Byssow .

King Ludwig kept the Dobriner land and did not give it up to Kasimir's heirs, the dukes Wartislaw VII, Bogislaw VIII and Barnim V. In the government in the Duchy of Pomerania-Stolp, Duke Wartislaw VII followed, who initially ruled for his two younger brothers at the same time.

Marriages

Duke Casimir IV was married twice. His first marriage was Kenna, daughter of Prince Olgerd of Lithuania. She died in 1368. He then married Margaretha, daughter of Duke Ziemowit III , in the same year . of Mazovia.

He had no offspring. His widow Margaretha married Duke Henry VIII of Brieg in 1379 .

count

The counting of the rulers of the Griffin House has always been involved. There has been an inequality here from age that causes some confusion. The more modern census than Casimir IV. Results if one only counts the members of the narrow Greifenhaus. If, on the other hand, one counts a Casimir from the sidelines of the Swantiboriden , the result is the count as Casimir V , which was common in older literature.
