Ernst I of Braunschweig-Grubenhagen (* around 1297 ; † March 9, 1361 ) was Prince of Braunschweig-Grubenhagen .

Life

He was a son of Henry I the Whimsical and his wife Agnes , b. Margravine of Meissen. Heinrich der Wunderliche founded the Principality of Grubenhagen in 1291 after a Guelph inheritance. Originally intended for the clergy, after the death of his father in 1322, Ernst and his brothers Heinrich II. And Wilhelm took over the rule in the Principality of Grubenhagen.

This principality was already a rather small territory compared to the other Guelph sub-principalities. Due to the large number of children of Heinrich the Wunderlichen (eight sons and eight daughters), it was difficult for him to look after all his offspring appropriately. The eldest son Heinrich II could therefore not take the undivided rule over the principality. In 1324 he concluded an extensive property agreement with his brothers Ernst and Wilhelm, according to which the territory should be governed jointly, but shortly afterwards the government was divided. The area around Einbeck , Grubenhagen and Osterode fell seriously . The cities of Duderstadt , Osterode and Einbeck were ruled together. In 1359 he made his son Albrecht co-regent.

Ernst's older brother Heinrich died in 1351, and his sons stayed abroad and died without any descendants. After the death of his childless younger brother Wilhelm in 1360, the entire principality of Grubenhagen was ruled by Ernst. After his death in 1361 he was followed by his son Albrecht.
