Earl of Powis is a hereditary British title of nobility . The title has been awarded three times so far, one each in the Peerage of England , the Peerage of Great Britain and the Peerage of the United Kingdom .

The name of the title refers to the family seat of the Earls, Powis Castle near Welshpool in Montgomeryshire , Wales .

Awards

The title was first awarded in the Peerage of England on April 4, 1674 to William Herbert, 3rd Baron Powis from the Herbert family . In 1687 he was further raised to Marquess of Powis . As a leading Catholic nobleman, he joined the Jacobites after the Glorious Revolution ; the new English government then declared him a traitor and withdrew his titles. His son gave up the Jacobite cause and obtained the restoration of the titles and associated dignities in 1722. With the childless death of his son in 1748, the titles expired.

In the same year, the title, now in the Peerage of Great Britain, was awarded for the second time, to the relative Henry Herbert . The title expired in 1801 when his son, the 2nd Earl , died childless.

Three years later, in 1804, the title was awarded the third time, this time in the Peerage of the United Kingdom, to Edward Clive, 2nd Baron Clive , son of the Indian hero Robert Clive, 1st Baron Clive . He was married to Henrietta , the sister of the last earl's second bestowal. Her son, who later became the 2nd Earl , had inherited the family estates including Powis Castle from his uncle in 1801 and, as a condition for the inheritance, took over his surname and coat of arms.

Subordinate title

The grandfather of the first earl, William Herbert , of the first award was in turn a longtime MP. He was therefore raised to Baron Powis in the Peerage of England in 1629 . The title expired with the earliest dignity.

The first earl of the second bestowal held the title of Baron Herbert of Chirbury since 1743 . With the earliest dignity, the subordinate titles Viscount Ludlow and Baron Powis were bestowed in 1748 . Finally, in 1749, the first earl received the dignity of Baron Herbert of Chirbury and Ludlow with a special succession arrangement. All titles that belonged to the Peerage of Great Britain expired when the second earl died without a descendant entitled to inheritance.

In the third award, the first earl had inherited the title of Baron Clive , of Plassey in the County of Clare , who belonged to the Peerage of Ireland , from his father before his elevation . In 1794 he was made Baron Clive , of Walcot in the County of Shropshire , in the Peerage of Great Britain. Finally, the titles of Baron Powis , of Powis Castle in the County of Montgomery, Baron Herbert , of Chirbury in the County of Shropshire, and Viscount Clive , of Ludlow in the County of Shropshire, were bestowed with the Earls of Honor . You belong to the Peerage of the United Kingdom. The title heir carries the courtesy title Viscount Clive .

Other titles

The first earl of the first bestowal was made Marquess of Powis with the subordinate title Viscount Montgomery on March 24, 1687 . He later received the Jacobite title Duke of Powis, not recognized in England . All titles expired when the third marquess died unmarried in 1748.
