Awards
The title was first awarded on May 6, 1583 to John Bourke, a younger son of Richard Bourke , 2nd Earl of Clanricarde . He died on November 11, 1583 and left five illegitimate sons, but no legitimate heirs, so that the title expired.
In the second bestowal on October 11, 1783, the title of Baron Leitrim , of Manor Hamilton in the County of Leitrim , was created for the Irish House of Commons Robert Clements . On December 20, 1793 this was also elevated to Viscount Leitrim and on October 6, 1795 to the Earl of Leitrim . The barony was henceforth a subordinate title of the respective earl and finally expired when the 5th Earl of Leitrim died childless on June 9, 1952.
