Lists on the subject

The Barrett MRAD, or multi-role adaptive design, is a sniper rifle designed by Barrett Firearms Manufacturing, Inc to meet the requirements of the SOCOM Precision Sniper Rifle (PSR). The MRAD is based on the Barrett M98B with a number of modifications and improvements.

history

Barrett MRAD in caliber .308 Winchester with silencer .

After the United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) announced its desire for a new precision sniper rifle in December 2009, Barrett created the MRAD according to specifications set by SOCOM. This included a maximum shot deviation of 1.0 MOA from 300 to 1500 meters, as well as penetrating a NIJ Level III protective vest up to 900 meters.

The special model of the MRAD that was entered for the PSR competition was equipped with a 62 cm barrel and weighed 6.7 kg (without optics). In 2013 the Remington Modular Sniper Rifle was chosen as the winner of the PSR competition.

In 2019, however, the US Special Operations Command, Barrett Manufacturing placed an order for $ 50,000,000 and ordered the Barrett MRAD, which will be used in the .338 Norma Magnum for the Advanced Sniper Rifle (ASR) project as the Mk 22 ASR. The rifle issued includes interchangeable barrels and breeches with .308 Winchester, .300 Norma Magnum, and .338 Norma Magnum.

technology

The MRAD builds on the successful Barrett 98B and has numerous improvements, such as: B. a folding stock , which makes it easier to transport the rifle. When folded, the stock engages around the bolt handle, which increases safety when transporting the rifle without increasing the width when folded. An essential feature of the MRAD (and a prerequisite for the military PSR requirement) is the ability to change the barrel / caliber in the operational area. The barrel can be removed from the front of the housing / handguard by loosening two Torx screws in the housing. The caliber can be changed with just a simple change of the bolt head and in some cases a magazine change. The factory-set bolt head is supplied with each barrel. A barrel / caliber change can be done in less than two minutes. In addition to the typical .338 Lapua Magnum, .300 Winchester Magnum and .308 Winchester calibers required by the military, Barrett also offers popular caliber conversion kits in .338 and .300 NORMA, 7 mm Remington, .260 Remington and 6.5 mm Creedmoor. Barrel lengths are available in 17 "to 26", but not in all calibers. The barrels are available in fluted and heavy profiles. The trigger module can be removed without tools , which allows access to the user-adjustable trigger weight and pull-in travel and makes cleaning easier. Other features of the MRAD include a one-button pull length adjustment, an adjustable cheek rest height, a polymer lock guide that acts as a dust cover to reduce the ingress of dirt into the chamber, a user-reversible fuse , in the AR-15- Style, an ambidextrous magazine release and the ability to accommodate standard M16 / AR15 style pistol grips.
