Barry Reed

Barry Clement Reed (born January 28, 1927 in Alameda (California) , † July 19, 2002 in Norwood (Massachusetts) ) was an American trial lawyer and bestselling author .

Life

Barry Reed was born to Clement Barry and Julia Donahue Reed on January 28, 1927 in Alameda . In 1949 he earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the College of the Holy Cross . In 1951 he married Marie Ash. He had four children: Debra, Marie, Susan and Barry. He earned a Bachelor of Laws from Boston College in 1954 . He was admitted to the Massachusetts State Bar in 1955 and opened a private law firm in Boston .

Reed built a solid reputation as an attorney specializing in medical malpractice, personal injury, and civil litigation. For his outstanding legal work, he was honored with the Clarence Darrow Prize for outstanding litigation. He was a past president of the Massachusetts Trial Lawyers Association , past governor of the Massachusetts Academy of Trial Lawyers, and a co-founder of the American Society of Law and Medicine .

In addition to his legal practice, Reed was a celebrated writer. After publishing two legal texts, he wrote the court drama The Verdict in 1980 . At the center of the novel is a dejected attorney leading malpractice trial against two prominent doctors whose negligence put a pregnant woman into a coma. The Verdict was translated into twelve languages ​​and filmed under the same title in 1982 based on a screenplay by David Mamet . The leading actors were Paul Newman and James Mason . The film was directed by Sidney Lumet and was nominated for five Academy Awards , including Best Picture and Best Actor.

Reed died on July 19, 2002 in Norwood, Massachusetts .

Reed's protégé was Jan Schlichtmann , a trial attorney famous for his lawsuit against WR Grace and Company and Beatrice Foods for leukemia deaths from contaminated drinking water in Woburn, Massachusetts . Schlichtmann's case was the basis for a civil suit that won a National Book Critics Circle Award and was also filmed.
