Bartholomaeus Anglicus

Bartholomeus Anglicus (: also Bartholomew the Englishman , Bartholomew of England , Bartholomew the Englishman ; * in 1190 in Suffolk , † after 1250) was a from England originating Franciscan scholastics and author of De proprietatibus Rerum , a precursor of the Encyclopedia and the first reference of the Middle Ages, which also takes the flora into account.

He was previously confused with the Franciscan Bartholomaeus de Glanvilla, who lived in the 14th century.

Life

Not much is known about Bartholomaeus' life. Around 1225 he entered the Franciscan order. He probably studied in Paris. Around 1230 he worked as baccalaureus biblicus in Paris in the Paris Minorite School. In 1231 he went to Magdeburg as a lecturer at the religious studies, where he completed his biblical, exegetical, encyclopedic work De proprietatibus rerum around 1240.
