Life

He married Ursula geb. Hummel (1611–1695), the widow of the farmer from Oberfallengrundhof in Neukirch, Bartle Valler, who was "judged and falsed for witchcraft in 1636". Winterhalder ran the farm until it was taken over in 1654 by the son of Bartle Valler, Georg Valler (1624 - after 1673). On the old part, Winterhalder was able to devote himself more to carving in the workshop that remained for him than before. Of his eight children, two became sculptors, namely the second, Johann Conrad (1640–1676), and the seventh, Adam (around 1652–1737). The farm passed from Georg Valler through a Bartle Valler and a Christoph Faller to Georg Faller (1675–1948), the father of the famous sculptor Matthias Faller , who took over the workshop that still existed on the farm when he returned from the journeyman's journey in 1732.

The documented works have been destroyed, but the following works have been preserved, which are very likely to be attributed to him:

  • It was not until 2005 that Manfred Hermann extended the attributions to include items from the parish church of St. Nikolaus in Waldau, a district of Titisee-Neustadt , namely the tabernacle of the high altar from 1661 and the two side altars from 1670 and 1675. The Madonna of the Marien Altar is one of the most important of the time in the Black Forest ”. St. Nicholas of the Nicholas altar is today on the left wall of the nave. Most of the rest of the furnishings were created by Matthias Faller about a hundred years later.

Appreciation

Bartholomäus had a good name as an artist, because in 1661 he was called "a respected and skillful sculptor from Neukirch". His figures appear “convincing and clear.” After the Thirty Years War had devastated many churches, he was offered a rich field of activity. So he became the "father of sculpture in the central Black Forest".
