The leistus or beard beetle ( Leistus -. Probably of greater ληίστης "robber") is a genus of beetles from the family of ground beetles (Carabidae) within the subfamily Nebriinae . It occurs in Europe with 59 species and subspecies, 9 are also native to Central Europe. The genus is distributed Holarctic .

features

The beetles are characterized by their laterally flattened mandibles and wide, externally long spiny maxillae . Your pronotum is heart-shaped.

The larvae are usually pale in color and have dark shields that can have a metallic sheen. They have a large, rounded, stalked head with long mandibles protruding forward. Their long legs have long eyelashes, the cerci are provided with bristles. They resemble the larvae of swimming beetles (Dytiscidae) in their appearance .

Occurrence and way of life

The animals mainly feed on springtails (Collembola), which are probably caught with the long bristles under the head.

Types (selection)

The genus comprises 189 species (as of 2005). It is distributed holarctic , with a focus on the palaearctic (all but 3 species). In addition to a few species living in forests and some in cultivated land or steppe-living species, the distribution center of the genus is in the high mountains.

Leistus belongs to the tribe Nebriini with some related genera, especially Archastes and Nebria . Some systematists assign this to the subfamily Carabinae , while many others recognize an independent subfamily Nebriinae that is probably closely related according to the morphology, especially of the thorax .
