Bartolomé Martínez González (* 1860 in Lipululu in the Matagalpa Department , today Jinotega Department , † January 30, 1936 in Matagalpa ) was President of Nicaragua from October 12, 1923 to January 1, 1925 .

Life

Bartolomé Martínez was the son of Crescencio Martínez and Juana González. Crescencio Martínez was prefect of Matagalpa from 1877 to 1878 and treasurer from 1875 to 1895 for the construction of the parish church of San Pedro de Matagalpa . Bartolomé Martínez González attended elementary school in Matagalpa and the Instituto Nacional de Oriente in Granada . After the death of his older brother, Benjamin, he took over the management of the Estancia El Bosque, which grew coffee and raised cattle.

Emiliano Chamorro Vargas appointed him Jefe Político de Matagalpa in 1917 and his government minister in 1919. In 1918 he was elected vice-president for the candidacy of Diego Manuel Chamorro Bolaños in party elections of the Partido Conservador . Chamorro was elected in 1920 and with him Martínez took office as Vice President on January 1, 1921. After Chamorro's death on October 12, 1923, he became president under the constitution. His correct conduct of office led to the pointed statement: "He left the office poorer than he took it."

In 1909, one of his predecessors, Adolfo Díaz , left Nicaragua's customs revenue to the US government for a loan. After the First World War , coffee prices rose and Martínez González was able to win back the customs revenue for the Nicaraguan government. He was also able to trigger the Banco Nacional and the Ferrocarril de Nicaragua , which were in the hands of US banks.

Partido Conservador Republicano

Segundo Albino Román y Reyes, (married to Ninfa Vega Martínez), was one of his ministers who prepared a pact between conservatives and liberals that brought Martinez into conflict with the party leader of the Partido Conservador , Emiliano Chamorro Vargas. Bartolomé broke with the chairman of the Partido Conservador , Chamorro Vargas, and founded the Partido Conservador Republicano .

The presidential candidate of the Partido Conservador Republicano José Carlos Solórzano Gutiérrez was elected president in the 1925 elections. Chamorro Vargas also ran, but did not win the majority of the vote.
