Bartsiella rameauana is a semi-parasitic plant species fromthe summer root family (Orobanchaceae). It is the only species in the genus Bartsiella . It is closely related to the genus of the tooth rusts ( Odontites ) and is occasionally assigned to them. The generic name honors the German doctor and botanist Johann Bartsch (1709 - 1738).

description

Vegetative characteristics

Bartsiella rameauana is an annual plant with a height of 5 to 15 cm . The stem grows prostrate-ascending or upright and is up to 0.9 mm thick at the base. It is covered with simple, whitish and bristly trichomes , as well as with sparsely to abundantly scattered, up to 0.5 mm long stalk glands. The heads of the stalk glands are ellipsoidally shaped and consist of four to eight (rarely up to 16) cells. The vegetative part of the plant consists of five to nine nodes , from which up to three side branches can arise. These protrude sparingly at an angle of 60 to 90 °.

The leaves have a length of 7 to 14 mm and a width of 1 to 1.8 mm; they are bristly hairy, on the upper leaves one can sometimes find stalk glands. The margins are whole and slightly rolled down.

Inflorescences and flowers

The inflorescences, which are clearly separated from the vegetative part of the plant, consist of 12 to 16 flowers . They are initially 2 to 4 cm long and lengthen to 5.5 cm when the fruit ripens. The zone of inhibition between the vegetative part and the blossoming flowers consists of one to five nodes. The flowers are accompanied by foliage-like, ovate-lanceolate and whole-margined bracts . They are studded with simple bristly trichomes and stalk glands.

The blooming sequence of the flowers of an inflorescence is from bottom to top. The flowers are self-fertilizing (autogamous) and reach a length of 8.5 to 10 mm. The calyx is 5.5 to 6.5 mm long at the time of flowering, the sepals are free from each other for about half the length. The calyx lobes are narrow triangular. The crown is brown-purple in color, the 4.5 to 6 mm long corolla tube takes up a little more than half the length. The transition between the corolla tube and the coronet is densely hairy. The coronet consists of a 2.8 to 3.8 mm long helmet and a 2.5 to 3.2 mm long lower lip. The lower lip is split up to about halfway into three lobes, and many cephalic glands can be found on the corner bays and on the edge of the tip.

The four stamens are partly hidden in the helmet. The upper pair has stamens with a length of 1.6 to 2.2 mm, at the lower pair they are 2.6 to 3.5 mm long. All stamens are papillary . The anthers are brown-purple in color, have a length of 1.1 to 1.6 mm and are at right angles to the stamens. The counters tear open over the entire length, are pointed at the lower end, the upper end is blunt. In the lower part they are densely hairy with white beards, at the upper end there are spirally shaped hairs. The pollen grains have a size of about 29 × 35.2 µm, their equatorial cross-section is circular, the pollen grain wall (exine) is everywhere evenly thick and roughly and irregularly sculptured. The ovary forms in two subjects ten to twelve ovules . The scar is heady.

Fruits and seeds

The fruits are ellipsoidal to inverted egg-shaped capsules , which reach a length of 4.8 to 5.3 mm and a width of 2.5 to 3 mm. The seeds are 1.3 to 1.8 × 0.4 to 0.6 mm in size.

Occurrence and locations

Bartsiella rameauana is common in Morocco, in the High and Middle Atlas Mountains . It grows at altitudes between 2800 and 3600 mm with dwarf and semi-shrubs together in gappy thorn upholstery garigues on compact rock.

Botanical history

The species was first described in 1932 by Louis Emberger as Odontites rameauanus . Markus Bolliger placed it in its own genus Bartsiella in 1996, mainly due to the characteristics of the hair and the pollen structure . Another species, described in 1953 as Odontites pseudo-granatensis , was initially synonymous with Bartsiella rameauana due to insufficient herbarium .
