Basile Georges Casmoussa (born October 25, 1938 in Baghdida , Iraq ) is a Syrian Catholic clergyman, retired Curia Archbishop in the Patriarchate of Antioch in Lebanon and Apostolic Visitator for the Syrian Catholic believers in Australia.

Life

Casmoussa entered the seminar “St. John ”in Mosul, where he completed his philosophical and theological studies. He was ordained a priest on June 10, 1962 . In the following two years he worked as head of the seminary in Charfet ( Lebanon ) and at the same time as a collaborator in the Curia of the Patriarchate of the Syrocatholics in Beirut.

From 1964 he devoted himself to youth work in his home country Iraq and was also editor-in-chief of the magazine Al-Fikr Al Masihi .

From 1973 to 1976 he studied social sciences at the Catholic University of Leuven.

Casmoussa headed the Syrian Catholic Archeparchy of Mosul from 1999 to 2011 , after he had received episcopal ordination on December 9, 1999 by the patriarch and later Cardinal Ignatius Moussa I Daoud .

On January 17, 2005, Casmoussa was forced into a car by armed men in front of his church and taken to an undisclosed location, according to media reports and reports from the Vatican . In a statement, the Vatican sharply condemned the kidnapping and spoke of a terrorist act. Immediate release was requested. After 24 hours, he was released without paying any ransom.

On March 1, 2011 he was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI. appointed Curia Archbishop in the Patriarchate of the Syrian Catholic Church of Antioch in Beirut , united with Rome .

On January 13, 2014, Pope Francis appointed him Apostolic Visitator for the Syrian Catholic faithful in Western Europe. In this position he succeeded Jules Mikhael Al-Jamil , who died on December 3, 2012. After resigning from this office on March 7, 2017, Pope Francis appointed him Apostolic Visitator for Syrian Catholics in Australia on June 21 of the same year.
