The former pilgrimage church of the Archdiocese of Reims bears the title of a minor basilica . The Church of Our Lady in Mézières was built in the 16th and up to the 17th century in the Gothic style and is protected as a monument historique . The modern stained glass windows by the painter René Dürrbach, completed in 1979, are significant .

history

On the foundations of the Romanesque predecessor church from 1267, after the laying of the foundation stone on April 25, 1499, construction of the flamboyant Gothic church began. Starting from the choir, the last yoke of the nave could be vaulted in 1565 . The tower was built from 1597 to 1615, and in 1615 the vaults of the first yokes could be completed. The name “ Our Lady of Hope ” was given to the church at the beginning of the 19th century when it received the statue of the Black Madonna , which was previously worshiped in a nearby chapel, the pilgrimages ended in 1962. The south portal and the top of the steeple were added in the 19th century in neo -Gothic style . The spire was completed in 1858 by Auguste Reimbeau. The church was repeatedly destroyed, in the Wars of Religion, during the French Revolution, then in 1815, 1870, 1918 and lastly in 1944 during US bombings. Pope Pius XII awarded the church the rank of minor basilica in 1946. The simple, sober interior was restored by 1950.

architecture

The five-aisled basilica is characterized by the narrow main nave and thus emphasizes the height of the 18 m high star vault . The gallery staircase and the outer west portal were added in the Renaissance style .

Furnishing

After the almost complete destruction of the original stained glass windows, the painter and sculptor René Dürrbach (1910–1999) created the current windows between 1955 and 1979, which were implemented in the workshop of master André Seurre in Besançon by him and later by Jacqueline Nicol. The symbolism of the 62 stained glass windows and 6 oculi of abstract art represent a meditation path that relates to the Madonna of Hope and the Black Madonna on more than 1000 square meters. In the choir, Dürrbach designed Maria Krönung.

The organ was built in 1997 by the Kœnig company in Sarre-Union. The purely mechanically functioning instrument with 40 registers was designed in the classic style of northern European organs.
