The Basilica of St. Lucia ( Spanish Basílica de Santa Lucía ) is a Roman Catholic church in Timotes in the Venezuelan state of Merida . The church in the Andes belongs to the Archdiocese of Mérida and is St. Consecrated to Lucia of Syracuse .

history

The three-aisled church was completed in 1911 in the center of the village at Plaza Bolivar. The bell tower rises to the right of the facade. The high altar, completed in 1915, is significant.

A major restoration began in 1997. This was so successful due to the good cooperation of the community that Archbishop Baltazar Porras applied to the Vatican for the rank of Basilica minor in March 2002 , supported by the working committee in Timotes and by today's Curia Cardinal Leonardo Sandri as a substitute for the Vatican State Secretariat . In November of the same year, the unusually rapid uprising under Pope John Paul II was decided. On May 24, 2003, Archbishop Baltazar Porras chaired the award ceremony.
