The Basilica of St. Nicholas ( Spanish Basilica San Nicolas de Bari ) is a Roman Catholic church in the district of Retiro in Buenos Aires , capital of Argentina . The parish church belonging to the Archdiocese of Buenos Aires was consecrated to Nikolaus von Myra and has been a minor basilica since 1937 .

history

The original church was built in 1733 on the initiative of the Spaniard Domingo de Acassuso, who died while visiting the construction site. It stood on the corner of today's Av. Corrientes and Carlos Pellegrini and gave the San Nicolás neighborhood its name. A monastery has belonged to the church since the 18th century. On August 23, 1812, the national flag of Manuel Belgrano in the city of Buenos Aires was hoisted for the first time on the church tower at a church service .

In 1931 the church had to be demolished to widen the Avenida Corrientes. The Buenos Aires Obelisk was erected there. The current building was consecrated on November 29, 1935. In 1937 the church was elevated to a minor basilica .

architecture

The symmetrical double tower facade stands slightly set back in the street front . The towers frame a triangular gable with relief figures and an attached cross. The gable closes off the two- story column portico , the lower floor of which leads from street level to the church via a wide staircase. The original bells of the first church have been preserved in one of the church towers. The single-nave basilica with short transepts is designed with barrel vaults . The crossing dome with a lantern rises in the center of the church . Walls and ceilings are decorated with neo-baroque stucco work, six murals with inlaid mosaics adorn the walls, and the bronze candlesticks are also significant. On the right side of the main altar, in the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament, is an arm relic of St. Héctor Valdivielso Sáez , the first Argentine canonized. He was baptized in the old church in 1913. In a side altar is the chapel of the Madonna of the Rosary of San Nicolás. To the left of the entrance to the basilica is a chapel with the image of the Virgin of Desamparados, today's patron saint of Valencia , which comes from Spain and was transferred from the old church.
