Beorgs of Skelberry

The Beorgs of Skelberry is a 198-meter-high mountain in the north of Mainland , the main island of about Scotland scoring Shetlands . It is located on the North Roe Peninsula and in the Northmavine Community Council Area . It has a steep flank on the east side that extends for about three kilometers in a north-south direction. Geologically, these are the border between the mainly of granites and Granophyren existing Pluton Northmaven Complex in the west and the Fethaland series in the East, the creation time of the Old Red Sandstone sedimentary deposited metamorphic rocks with a high content of hornblendehaltigem gneiss . At the foot of the Beorgs of Skelberry, just a few meters above sea level , lies the eponymous hamlet of Skelberry in the southeast and North Roe in the northeast . To the north it merges into the 121 meter high Hill of Sandvoe, between the two rises the Vatsendi Burn, which flows from here to the Loch of Flugarth . The eastern part of the Beorgs of Skelberry drains over the Burn of Houlland to the northeast to Burra Voe Bay , the west over the Burn of Sandvoe to Roer Mill and the southwest over the Burn of Roerwater to the Voe of the Brig . To the south, beyond a follow up to a height of about 80 meters down-range saddle , the 147 meter high Beorgs of Housetter . On the summit of the Beorgs of Skelberry there is a trigonometric point , marked by a surveying pillar of the Vanessa type , as well as several cairns .

The Beorgs of Skelberry marks the northeast corner of an uninhabited area, which is characterized in the northern part by a moor and heathland landscape with several lakes, in the south by the highest mountain in the Shetlands, Ronas Hill . It is placed under nature protection in several categories: As a nature protection ( SSSI ) and FFH area (SAC) Ronas Hill - North Roe and as a Ramsar area and protected area according to the EU Birds Directive (SPA) Ronas Hill - North Roe and Tingon .
