history

The parish of St. Patrick was founded around 1850. In 1894, the Oblates of the Immaculate Virgin Mary came to Australia from Ireland and received the parish to care for. They set up their first branch in Australia here. The current church was designed in neo-Gothic style by the architect Michael Cavanagh . The foundation stone was laid on St. Patrick's Day in 1898. The nave was opened on June 3, 1900. The design integrates a nave with aisles and light alleys , a transept and a wide and spacious apse . An adapted choir was opened on April 24, 1960 .

The church was raised to the rank of minor basilica on July 20, 1994 by Pope John Paul II . The church has been a protected monument together with the rectory since 1996 .

organ

The present organ was built from 1988 to 1990 by the Australian organ builder Bellsham. Some components of the Bishop organ from 1895 were reused. It integrates the divided large organ in the west gallery with a connected twin organ in the south transept.

This instrument was extensively rebuilt and expanded by the South Island Organ Company from Timaru , New Zealand . The work was completed at Easter 1998 and represents the largest parish church organ in Australasia.
