The Basilica of St. Peter ( Portuguese Basílica de São Pedro ) is a Roman Catholic church in Guimarães , northern Portugal . It belongs to the Union of Parishes of Oliveira, São Paio and São Sebastião, Guimarães of the Archdiocese of Braga and has the title of a minor basilica .

history

The church was built in 1737 by the Brotherhood of St. Peter erected. The unfinished church was consecrated on November 11, 1750 and was awarded the title of a minor basilica by Pope Benedict XIV as early as 1751 as the first of the Archdiocese of Braga . Under the French invaders , the church was profaned in 1808 and desecrated as a stable. After that, from 1811 houses around the basilica were demolished and construction continued until 1824. After another long break in construction, the church was completed between 1880 and 1884 in its current form with a side church tower.

architecture

The parish church was built in a strict classicism . The longitudinal structure consists of a nave and the choir , which is lower and narrower. The main facade with three windows ends in the triangular pediment, it was decorated with the papal tiara on the coat of arms of the tympanum and the papal cross. Three arches form the entrance. On the left is the bell tower with a clock, its counterpart was not built. The church furnishings include the large high altar with polychrome and gilded carving as well as the tabernacle , the choir stalls , two pulpits and four side altarpieces.
