The Basilica of Our Lady of Candelaria ( Spanish Basílica de Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria ) is a Roman Catholic church in Medellín , Colombia . The church dedicated to Our Lady under the Invocation of the Virgin of Candelaria is the former cathedral of the Archdiocese of Medellín and is located near the present-day Catedral Metropolitana de Medellín in the city center on the east side of Berrío Park.

history

The church was originally built in 1649 as the oldest church in the city, which was only founded 30 years later, as a simple wooden structure with a thatched roof. The veneration of Our Lady of Candelaria came with the Spaniards of Tenerife and refers to the feast of the Presentation of the Lord . The first image of the Child of God in the temple and the purification of his most holy mother were donated by Ramón Álvarez. Today's picture in the main altar is said to have been given by the Spanish Queen Maria Anna of Austria and her son Karl II . The dilapidated church was replaced by a new building from 1768, which was consecrated in 1776. In 1850 the church received a new altar and a new organ, and in 1860 a new dome was completed. With the creation of the Diocese of Medellín, the church was elevated to a cathedral in 1868, until the current cathedral was consecrated in 1931. On February 28, 1888, the two church towers were completed, and in 1890 they received three bells from New York.

On December 8, 1970, Pope Paul VI bestowed . her the title of a minor basilica. Renovation work was carried out in 1997 and on July 31, 1998, the building was declared a National Monument of Colombia by Decree 0795.

architecture

The church is a colonial building in the classical style. The rectangular complex has three naves and a transept, above which the crossing dome with an eight-sided tambour . The plastered portal has three portals, the side bodies lead to the church towers, the middle one closes with a triangular gable. The church's original stone and mortar masonry has been partially redesigned over the course of history.

Furnishing

The high altar of La Candelaria shows in the upper center the image of the Virgin of La Candelaria in a kind of portico, which rests laterally on four columns made of gold-colored wood, which are arranged in rows of two.

The silver tabernacle was ordered in France in 1865 and stands in front of the high altar. The organ was made to replace a previous instrument by the German organ builder Eberhard Friedrich Walcker . It has two manuals and a pedal for 15. It was repaired in 1978.
