Basel Poetry Prize

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Basler Poetry Prize is a literary prize for poets that is awarded annually to colleagues as part of the Basel International Poetry Festival by the members of the Basel Poetry Group (as of 2014: Urs Allemann , Rudolf Bussmann , Ingrid Fichtner , Wolfram Malte Fues , Rolf Hermann and Kathy Zarnegin) . It should serve as recognition for linguistic innovation and the “courage to swim against the current”. It is also intended to help make important lyrical voices known to a wider public.

It is endowed with 10,000 SFr and is financed with the support of the Society for the Good and Charitable Basel (GGG). The award ceremony will take place in the Literaturhaus Basel .

The Basler Poetry Group was formed in the 1990s from a series of working meetings between well-known poets. The International Poetry Festival emerged from an initiative of the group in 2003, when its members each invited a colleague to read. In 2008 the Basel Poetry Prize was awarded for the first time and since 2009 the festival has been held for three days at the end of January at the Literaturhaus Basel. The organization takes over Katrin Eckert, the head of the literature house.

In addition to the awarding of the poetry prize , the festival's events include readings , an interdisciplinary podium, a major event with an internationally known poet, a tribute to a deceased poet, and poetry writing and discussion groups in cooperation with the Volkshochschule Basel.
